Hotels, like airline and car rental companies, routinely overbook. This is done to protect against "no shows" and last-minute cancellations. It also means people with confirmed reservations are sometimes left without accommodations. When this happens, if you have a guaranteed reservation, the hotel is obligated to provide accommodations by "walking" you. Walk policies vary, but the traveler is usually provided:
- Assistance in securing alternate accommodations at the closest comparable hotel.
- Compensation, generally equal to the cost of the first night's accommodations at the alternate hotel.
- Transportation to the alternate hotel.
- A phone call to advise family or business associates of the hotel change.
*Note that these walk policies apply only when the reservation was guaranteed at the time of booking. Consult with your personal travel consultant at Bay Travel International for assistance with any of these situations.
